In October, 1858, the New York Evening Post said the debates between Abraham Lincoln Stephen Douglas “have attracted the attention of the whole country… the whole nation has stood still to listen to the voice of its greatest men.”
That’s the setup of Stagework Hudson‘s latest production, The Rivalry, which runs through October 21.
Norman Corwin’s transcendent Broadway play, The Rivalry, recreates the blistering face-off between Lincoln, the rising Illinois legislator and Douglas, the incumbent U.S. senator as they tackle slavery, equality, states’ rights and the future of America. Their battle comes to life through the eyes of Douglas’ wife, Adele, who passionately reexamines her long-held beliefs about freedom. For information and tickets, visit stageworkshudson.org
